In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month, we also wanted to remind everyone how to conduct a self breast exam. This exam should be done once a month, at the same time each month, typically 3-5 days after your period. First, examine your breasts in a mirror with your hands on your hips. Observe size, shape, color, and if any abnormalities are noted including the presence of fluid. Then conduct the same inspection with your arms above your head. Now, there are several different palpation methods displayed (circular, up and down, or wedge). Conduct one palpation assessment while standing/sitting and one while lying down. Please don’t hesitate to call your physician if you notice any lumps or changes in breast tissue. Congratulations you have completed a self breast exam! Please see the link on the image above that brings you to an extensive self breast exam including abnormal findings and additional steps to take from breastcancer.org
